About Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor is a U.S. naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii. It was at Pearl Harbor that an extremely destructive surprise attack led by Japanese forces on December 7, 1941 was carried out. It was a Sunday morning, just before 8 a.m., when hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on the Pearl Harbor base. In the mayhem that ensued, the Japanese fighters destroyed or damaged nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight massive battleships, as well as more than 300 airplanes. Sadly, 2,400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians. More than 1,000 people were wounded. It was a surprise attack as the Japanese bombers were able to pass undetected due to a radar operator mistaking the airplanes as a fleet of American planes that were expected to return. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan.
